We learn the non-canon history of Elisa. A killer is on the loose, one Elisa thought she had put away. It was that slasher who got her the promotion to detective. But did she arrest the wrong man?

Miss last week’s? Read The Egg and I review.

Gargoyles Clan-Building: Issue 10: “Out of the Past”

Reason(s) for existence:  Disney wanted to make more money.

Main antagonist(s): Slasher

Time(s):  Between Thrill of the Hunt and Reawakening

Location(s):  NYC, NY

This is volume number 10: Out of the Past. We have an odd cover. Elisa is standing there with a snub-nose pistol and an impossibly thin waist. Behind her is an incomplete wall with just the studs. Behind that is a guy who has been tarred except for his fingers, which he’s washed but he didn’t use a paper towel, so he’s dripping all over the floor. There’s a little skin showing around his eyes. At least his teeth are nice and white.

We catch up with what’s going on with Goliath. He’s still bummed out about messing up the hatching ceremony. Tell me, Goliath, does a gargoyle egg usually need a ceremony to hatch? If not, then maybe you shouldn’t feel too bad. Things that require a ceremony to be awakened generally are not good for the world.

Less brooding. You’re not Batman.

A group of street punks find a body in an alley.

She’s dead, Jim.

Elisa goes to sleep in her apartment for once and has a dream about how she became a detective. She’s on the stakeout for a murderer. She thinks she’s caught him, but the guy claims he came out and found his girlfriend stabbed, then he pulled the knife out of her.

He might not be guilty, but he sure is stupid.

Elisa is touted as catching the Alley Killer. Pretty lame name.

Elisa wakes up to a phone call. The Alley Killer has struck again, despite the fact that the supposed AK, the one she caught, he’s still in prison. So either we’ve got a copycat, or she caught the wrong guy.

What kind of evidence did they have for the other killings?

Elisa meets up with Halie. He wants to cheer her up but he can’t really figure out how.

Mighty thoughtful with that weiner.

The trio find an entrance to the subway while snooping at a construction site. They act like they’ve never seen the subway or a train before.

Elisa is out questioning hookers. Apparently the murderer likes women who look like Elisa. Now there’s a surprise.

Not sure if they’re tranny hookers?

Elisa has another dream about the AK. At first it’s the guy she arrested. Then it’s some other, hairy guy. Just like the first suspect claimed the real killer was…

Good old dream sequences.

The gargoyles are just flying off as Elisa arrives on the clock tower. She’s on her own.

Elisa, the only livin’ cop in New York.

In the tunnels, the boys are really taken by the layout. They think it will be a “radical” place to “climb and swoop.”

I have never heard this ever being a thing for them in the show, so I’m not sure why they think this is as exciting as Disney World.

Bronx starts chasing a rat. Then a subway train roars by. It’s way more interesting than that rat.

Why doesn’t he chase cars then?

Elisa dresses like a hooker to lure out the AK. I wonder if she bothered to get back-up? And yes, this guy is very hairy.

He also needs new shoes.

Final Thoughts

Well, that’s the end of the issue. I know, it was short. But not much happened. Elisa has dreams about her past and how she may have gotten her promotion to detective illegitimately. The boys find the subway and Bronx runs off. Goliath sulks.

There really aren’t any fun villains, either. A slasher is hardly interesting.

This is an especially annoying issue because it goes into Elisa’s backstory…which is not canon. Okay if you want to play around with the current time and add some adventures, but origin story? No.

Tune in Tuesday: We find out who the killer is and if Elisa really should be a detective.
