Who says you can’t go back in time and save someone’s life? You can if it’s meant to be in the time stream. You can even save your own life! The Archmage pitched off a cliff in 984 AD, but thanks to magic and covering himself adequately regarding the time stream’s laws, he’s back and more powerful than ever in 1995. This episode is a mind bender! It’s also the setup for how and why the Archmage is terrorizing Avalon’s residents: Katherine, Magus, and 36 gargoyles. The mage wants ultimate power and revenge, and he won’t stop until he gets them.

Princes Katherine and her gang, along with 36 gargoyle eggs, think they’ve found safety at her uncle’s castle. But a usurper has other ideas. A Game of Thrones style of soap opera develops as soon as our protags walk in. Kenneth loves a noblewoman named Finella, but she loves Constantine, a rival to the king. Constantine loves power, which leads him to use her. Constantine kills the king and assumes the crown. He’s no fan of gargoyle eggs, either. His greatest scheme, though, is to marry Katherine against her will. It’s up to Magus, Tom, and Mary to save the day. But it comes at a steep price.

When a man from Goliath’s past turns up in full plate armor in New York City, asking the police about the clan and Goliath, Elisa, Goliath, and Bronx look for answers. It’s Tom, the boy who befriended the clan in Scotland in 994 AD. He says the gargoyle eggs from Castle Wyvern are in trouble on the isle of Avalon, threatened by the Archmage. But before Goliath can help, he needs to know what happened to Magus, Princess Katherine, Tom, Mary, and the 36 gargoyle eggs after the clan was turned to stone “until the castle rises above the clouds.”

While Macbeth distracts the clan from what they think is an ensorcelled statue of Hudson, the real Hudson is verbally sparring with Xanatos from behind electrified bars. Xanatos is using the magical Cauldron of Life to cook up a brew, which includes a piece of stone skin from a gargoyle, that will grant immortality. Hudson argues that immortality has a high price, one that Macbeth and Demona are paying. Xanatos knows that death and old age have a price as well, and it’s too expensive. In the end, his desire for immortality will cause an unlikely person to pay a high price.

Macbeth is back, and he’s on the hunt for trophies. Specifically, gargoyles. When his magic keeps Hudson from awakening from his stone sleep at sunset, the clan is left to find a solution. But it’s all a distraction for the real action: Xanatos has kidnapped Hudson. David wants Hudson’s skin. Why? It’s an ingredient in a magic brew that, according to the legend, will make whoever bathes in it “live as long as the mountain’s stones.” After all, what good are all the riches in the world – which Xanatos essentially has – if you die?

Hey, crew, after The Price, we’ll have sailed through 33 episodes of Gargoyles! That’s impressive. I’d like to thank everybody who’s read, and a double thanks to commenters. It’s been a wild ride!

Here’s the deal: We’re slam-bang in the middle of the series. The next story arc is the Avalon World Tour saga. Basically, Goliath, Elisa, Bronx, and a new character, a female gargoyle named Angela, take a magical skiff from the magical fey island Avalon on a magical tour of the world. Avalon transports them to various places around the globe to deal with certain problems. We meet new antagonists, learn more about the secrets of the Gargoyle-verse, and move the plot of the whole series forward.

When Dr Anton Sevarius, creator of the mutates, is kidnapped, everyone suspects the mutate leader Talon. And for good reason: Sevarius turned him into a winged panther against his will. Kidnapping the doctor might bring about a cure. But things aren’t what they seem. Circumstances can tempt even heroes into acting like villains. Will this tear the Maza family and the clan apart?

The eel cat bat Mutates are back in the Eyrie Building with House Xanatos. Meanwhile, Elisa’s family is wondering what happened to their son and brother, Derek. They have no idea he’s now called Talon, is the Mutates’ leader, and is basically a winged panther. When Dr Sevarius, creator of the Mutates, disappears, the suspicion falls on Talon. But he’s not the only one with a motive for kidnapping the Good Doctor. Do the ends justify the means in this ep?

Elisa Maza is cutting in on Tony Dracon’s protection racket. But it’s all part of a sting by the police. That doesn’t make it any less dangerous for Elisa. It’s a good thing she’s got her own muscle: Goliath and Broadway. They’re more than strong enough to take out the gangsters. But are they aware Elisa is on a police mission, or do they truly want to work with Dracon and Co? Money and power are tempting for gargoyles too. Demona and Thailog have proven that. The appeal of being an antagonist is strong!

Tony Dracon is the top dog in NYC’s organized crime scene. His protection rackets are second to none, and nobody muscles in on his territory. Until now. Word on the street is there’s a corrupt cop who wants a piece of the action. Who is this dirty cop? None other than Detective Elisa Maza. Besides threatening innocent bar owners, she’s also neglecting her relationship with Goliath. The clan senses a disturbance in the Force.
